Snippet from FEMERAID International Air Rescue as of 9 January 2025
The Air Rescue Team of FEMERAID International informs all our members, Knights and Dames of the Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, Knights of Malta, Federation of the Autonomous Priories (KMFAP) about the followings:

An outbreak of the virus in northern China has raised some concerns online, but experts believe the likelihood of another pandemic similar to COVID-19 is low. The symptoms of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) resemble those of a cold or flu, and it is one of several viruses commonly categorised under the broad term "common cold". Unlike COVID-19 or influenza, HMPV is not a notifiable disease. However, it can lead to more severe illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia, particularly among the elderly, very young children, and immunocompromised individuals.

While there is currently no vaccine or antiviral treatment available, some vaccines are in development. HMPV differs from COVID-19 in that it has existed for several decades, and a degree of immunity exists in the global population due to past infections. By following well-known COVID-19 precautions, we can help mitigate the spread of HMPV as well as influenza A (H1N1), which has been widespread in recent seasons, and influenza A (H3N2), another common strain known for causing significant illness, especially in older adults. Additionally, influenza B is also circulating and contributing to seasonal flu cases, alongside the human variant of the H5N1 avian influenza virus.
