Why is Covid-19 still a more dangerous infection than seasonal flu? Why should we maintain preventive measures when a large part of the population is vaccinated?
Contrary to what most people think, Covid-19 is not a respiratory disease; it’s a systemic disease. It affects multiple organs in the body and can easily compromise the vital functions. That’s why it is not just an ordinary flu. Maintaining the preventive measures against Covid-19 is more important than ever. Most of the vaccinated population is now starting to lose vaccine immunity, because the new variants are less responsive to the previous vaccines taken more than a year ago when Omicron did not exist yet. The preventive measures are effective for both diseases – flu and Covid-19.
For all the factors mentioned above, we must not minimize the existing risks, otherwise we will put the lives of the most vulnerable at risk again.
We must not forget that according to the WHO, the 2020/2021 seasonal flu has caused between 290,000 and 650,000 deaths worldwide and Covid-19 has killed more than 5 million people in the same period.
