What made this wave of COVID-19 infections different from the previous ones?
The main point that is concerning is the impact on younger and healthier people; the percentage of people hospitalised in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the 30s to 50s age range has increased by an average of more than 200% during this last wave. In this sense, it is no longer relevant to talk about ‘risk groups’.
According to a recent study, this difference is due to the fact that the new variants are at least 2.2 more infectious and lethal.
In the P1 variant from Brazil, for example, Graciana da Silva was one of the victims who died in Rio de Janeiro at the age of 28 without any co-morbidities.
Losing our grandparents and older family members is painful, but losing our children will be even more painful.
We are all at war with an invisible enemy!
