According to preliminary studies, the Omicron COVID-19 variant may have acquired a genetic sequence similar to that of common flu. According to the DNA snippet identified so far, this characteristic has not been found in the other variants currently in circulation. The global research community still needs a few more weeks to prove these findings. However if confirmed, the Omicron variant could give a less threatening face to the current period in the COVID-19 pandemic. This variant, which is more contagious by nature, may then occupy the space of other deadlier variants and become the dominant strain in circulation.
It must still be noted that there remains the capacity to be contaminated by more than one variant at the same time; so all hygiene precautions are still necessary at this point.
