Can COVID-19 affect the heart?
Initially, we thought COVID-19 was a respiratory disease. However, we soon found that the effects of the disease were much deeper – it was a systemic disease affecting the blood and heart. The virus first targets the lungs, which is why some of the most common symptoms are related to breathing, then the infection can spread to the heart.
The two most common heart-related COVID-19 complications are:
Myocarditis – the inflammation of your heart muscle, which may cause chest pain, fatigue, difficulty in breathing, and an irregular heartbeat.
Blood clots – these are clumps of blood with a gel-like consistency. They are the body’s natural way of healing itself to help stop a cut from bleeding. However, they sometimes form when and where they shouldn’t, which can be dangerous if they get stuck in a vein and stop blood from reaching your organs, arms or legs. It can also appear in your lungs or other parts of your body, causing swelling and pain in the arms or legs, cramps, discoloration, and warm spots.
The best way to prevent COVID-19 related Myocarditis is to get vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19. You must teach your body how to fight this enemy.
